Novatek to launch LNG terminal in Kamchatka in 2024 – governor

VLADIVOSTOK, Sep 7 (PRIME) -- The deadline for the launch by independent gas producer Novatek of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the Bechevinskaya Bay of the Kamchatka Peninsula remains the same, while full capacity will be reached in 2024, Kamchatka Region’s Governor Vladimir Solodov told PRIME on Wednesday.

When asked whether the launch date was delayed, he said, “No, the first pilot shipment should be done in 2023, and it will start working in full in 2024.”

“It has been approved at the presidential level that the gas will not bypass Kamchatka. We will start pumping gas in Kamchatka and replace the fuel oil that we burn here by a more environmentally friendly, efficient, and affordable fuel,” he said.

The terminal in the Bechevinskaya Bay will become a transit hub for transshipment of LNG from the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region’s port of Sabetta on its way to countries of the Asia-Pacific region. The terminal should drive the cargo transportation through the Northern Sea Route to 31.4 million tonnes until the end of 2026 from 9.7 million tonnes in 2017.
